The Macallan distillery is a single malt Scotch whisky producer located on a 485-acre estate in Speyside, Scotland. Founded in 1824 by Alexander Reid, it is known for its architectural beauty and exclusive use of sherry-seasoned oak casks in many of its whiskies. The estate is also home to the historic Easter Elchies House, the spiritual home of the brand.
- The stills: The Macallan uses a number of “curiously small” copper stills, which are a defining feature of the brand. When the new distillery was built, the 36 new stills were designed to be exact replicas of the original ones to maintain the distinct, rich, and oily character of the spirit.
- Oak casks: Macallan is particularly famous for its commitment to sherry-seasoned oak casks, with the brand investing more per cask than any other distillery. The casks play a crucial role, influencing up to 80% of the final whisky’s character and flavor.
- Estate barley: The distillery uses both Concerto barley and its own exclusive strain, Momentum, which is grown on the estate.
