The Catena wines are a special assemblage of High Mountain Estate Vineyards made by fourth generation vintner, Laura Catena and chief winemaker, Alejandro Vigil. Although we have found that most of the Catena wines are consumed shortly after release, we are pleased to see that they age beautifully for ten to twenty years. Through decades of study and exploration within Mendoza’s high altitude mountain terroirs, the Catena family has identified special locations for its Estate vineyards. From the marriage of these historic vineyards emerges a wine of unique character that has natural balance, concentration, and a distinct varietal identity.

This 93-point effort from the 2023 vintage is a masterclass in high-altitude viticulture, further cementing the estate’s status as the standard-bearer for Argentine Malbec.
Pouring a saturated, opaque purple-black, the wine explodes from the glass with a quintessential Mendoza perfume of crushed violets, crème de cassis, and wild blueberries. This primary fruit is seamlessly integrated with sophisticated nuances of graphite, baker’s chocolate, and a hint of smoky sandalwood derived from its precise elevage in French oak.
On the palate, it is a powerhouse of concentration and poise. Medium to full-bodied, it displays a remarkably dense mid-palate, packed with layers of black cherry and plum reduction. What sets this bottling apart is its stony, flinty minerality—a hallmark of the Adrianna and Nicasia vineyards—which provides a sense of lift and aristocratic structure. The tannins are ripe, fine-grained, and “grippy,” leading into a long, resonant finish defined by a refreshing acidity that ensures decades of longevity.
